JORDAN - PRACTICAL INFORMATION

Jordan Pass
Planning to stay in Jordan for more than 3 nights? Then be sure to get the Jordan Pass! The cheapest option costs 70 JOD (around €87 as of April 2025) per person. That might sound like a lot, but without it, you'll end up paying even more to visit the archaeological sites.

With the Jordan Pass, you get free entry to over 40 sites, including Petra. Plus, the visa fee is waived if you stay at least 3 nights.
A visa alone costs around 40 JOD (approx. €50), and a one-day ticket to Petra is 50 JOD (approx. €62). So if you're planning to visit Petra even just once, the Jordan Pass already saves you a good amount of money.

We opted for the Jordan Explorer Pass, which for just 5 JOD extra, gave us two full days in Petra.

🔒 Safety
We never felt unsafe anywhere in Jordan. Of course, it’s always wise to stay alert while traveling and keep your valuables out of sight.

🚗 Transport
Due to the limited public transport options, we recommend exploring Jordan by rental car. Outside the capital, the roads are quiet and it’s easy to find (free) parking. Road conditions are generally quite good.
Some people advise avoiding driving in Amman due to chaotic traffic and steep hills, but we found it very manageable. If you have enough driving experience and stay cautious, it shouldn’t be an issue.
Not confident behind the wheel? Then opt for taxis or public transportation when visiting the capital.

💰 Money
The local currency is the Jordanian Dinar (JOD). 1 JOD = approx. €1.25 (as of April 2025).
Most places accept card payments, but it’s smart to carry some cash just in case. You can exchange money or withdraw small amounts from ATMs—we withdrew money once at the start of our trip.
In general, prices are lower than in Belgium. We’d compare them to more affordable Southern European countries, like Portugal.
In Wadi Rum, accommodation can seem extremely cheap—sometimes €5 to €10 per person per night for a standard camp including breakfast and dinner. This isn’t a scam—they simply assume you'll also book a jeep tour or activity with them.
Tour prices vary depending on the duration and what's included, but expect around €50 per person, including lunch.

🌞 Best Time to Visit
Summers in Jordan are very hot, especially in the south, with temperatures exceeding 40°C. Winters, on the other hand, can be cold and rainy, and some wadis may be closed due to flood risks.
The best time to visit is spring (April to June) or autumn (September to November)—these months offer the best chance of mild temperatures and dry weather.
We visited during the autumn break (late October – early November). Wadi Mujib was already closed, but Wadi Ghuweir was still open and safe. Daytime temperatures were between 20–25°C.

📸 Drones
Recreational drone use by tourists is not allowed in Jordan. Professional filming is possible but comes with very high costs.
If you bring a drone without official permission, it could be confiscated at the airport.

🔌 Travel Adapter
Jordan has a mix of different plug types. You might be fine in some places, but we recommend bringing a travel adapter just to be safe.
